Fracture(2007)
Fracture (2007) Cast: Anthony Hopkins, Ryan Gosling An out and out thriller, and if you like court room dramas, even more chances you will like this one.
The Boxer (1987)
The Boxer (1987) Cast: Daniel Day Lewis, Emily Watson I did find some strains of similarity between The Boxer and In the Name of the Father, primarily the troubled times in Ireland. Daniel Day gives another spectacular performance along with Emily. Do not expect it to give you anything like Rocky, this is film is on a different level.

US Marshals(1998) Cast: Tommy Lee Jones, Wesley Snipes, Irene Jacob All that is required to make it a thriller. I liked Irene, later realized, I had seen her before in trilogy Red earlier.

Great Expectations (1998)
Great Expectations (1998) Cast: Ethan Hawke, Gwyneth Paltrow, Robert De Niro Based on the book by Charles Dickens The setting of the novel was changed to modern times, however tit was visual and literary brilliance at display. I have not relished Gwyneth's performance as an actor, but this movie was unlike the others. Amongst the classics, Great Expectations us finally a "check" for me.

The Waiting Room (2007)
The Waiting Room (2007) Director: Roger Goldby An evening pick from the free rental movies from Sundance Channel. Decent pick, but nothing extraordinary.
Life of Pi (2012)
Life of Pi (2012) Director: Ang Lee Cast: Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Adil Hussain Based on: Yann Martel’s book. Irrfan Khan and Tabu, are paving their way into the American cinema and have made quite a mark too. I amazes at the transformation that Tabu underwent from the girl in “Ruk Ruk Ruk” to roles in Maqbool, Cheeni Kum and so on. Irrfan has a direct, in your face style, and sticks to it. That’s pretty much about the cast. Well, like to add that I saw two films of Adil Hussain in quick succession, Life of Pi and English-Vinglish. His resemblance to Kay Kay Menon, is one thing I noticed, and I think he would make better cast in a negative role. Ang Lee is definitely a versatile director and his subjects/works/films are a proof of it. I first noticed Ang Lee with Sense and Sensibility, and then there has been no looking back. Every movie ever since, has been a masterpiece. Life of Pi is one of the very few books, I have purchased and not finished. When I heard, Life of Pi is being made as a movie, I wanted to see what I missed. The movie is matches nearly to what I had imagined how Pi would be in the boat with the tiger. It is a visual and imaginative treat.

The Dirty Picture (2011)
The Dirty Picture (2011)
Director: Milan Luthria
Cast: Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah, Awards: National Film Awards: Best Actress
When you hear The Dirty Picture, it’s right to associate it with sleaze, a predictable story build-up, plot, climax. Yet, it stands out. It stands out as it’s a movie about Silk, it stands out for Vidya’s performance and it stands out for being so candid about the Indian male audience!!
English-Vinglish(2012)
English-Vinglish(2012)
Director: Gauri Shinde
Cast: Sridevi, Adil Hussain
Awesome comeback for Sridevi; watch it for her. No wonder why it evoked so many Facebook comments, and thank-you mom notes.
Strains of “Zabaan Sambhalke” and “Cheeni Kum”.
Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012)
Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012)
Director: Yash Chopra
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif,
Watch out for strains of “Hurt Locker”, Royal Enfield, Indian Army. Avoid all the rest.

Full Metal Jacket (1987)
Full Metal Jacket (1987) Director: Stanley Kubrick Academy wins: Best adapted screenplay I have said it numerous times, and I can’t say it again. I was recommended this film, knew it was great, but never watched it. It was saved for another day. Few weeks back “Full Metal Jacket” was playing on TV, and yes it was gripping. Intellectual, witty, humorous and packed with a punch. Don’t miss it. Kubrick indeed does a grand job. Kubrick has never disappointed me. He was a genius.
Elizabeth (1998)
Elizabeth (1998) Director: Shekhar Kapur Cat: Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush, Joseph Fiennes, Academy Nominations: Best Film, Best Actress in a leading role, Best Art direction, Best Cinematography, Best Costume and Best Original Score Shekhar is one of my favorite directors. His works are really intricate and well researched; hence well received as well. Elizabeth is his most celebrated work. Even if you are repulsed by period dramas, do watch Elizabeth, it has substance. A good cinema. Cate Blanchett continues to amaze me with her versatility, in fact a lil too much of versatility. Geoffrey Rush and Joseph continue to show case what they are good at; good performance.
Summer Lovers (1962)
Summer Lovers (1962) Cast: Peter Gallagher, Daryl Hannah I watched this movie on Netflix, after moving to Beaverton. It was indeed a break from the other movies I had been watching. Great performance, good plot, a lil predictable, warm, you can feel the summer. And you can feel the summer lovers too…A decent watch

Jackie Brown (1997)
Jackie Brown (1997) Director: Quentin Tarantino Cast: Pam Grier, Samuel L Jackson, Bridget Fonda, Robert De Niro One of earlier films from Quentin’s collection, saw it only in 2012. Well, I would say a good film, good watch, good cast…but missed the Quentin’s mark. Not a disappointment, but not the masterpiece.
The Messenger (2009)
The Messenger (2009) Cast: Woody Harrelson, Steve Buscemi, Jena Malone, Ben Foster Oscar Nominations: Best Supporting Actor (Woody Harrelson), Best Original Screenplay Woody and Ben, put together an act that is quite a spectacle. The plot is, my favorite word “intriguing”; and has the needed ups and lows to keep the momentum. I like the way how the movie unfolds, how it reaches a climax and what happens in the midst. A balanced one, not the best one on the block, but a good earnest effort to make good movie
