Full Metal Jacket (1987)

Full Metal Jacket (1987) Director: Stanley Kubrick Academy wins: Best adapted screenplay I have said it numerous times, and I can’t say it again. I was recommended this film, knew it was great, but never watched it. It was saved for another day. Few weeks back “Full Metal Jacket” was playing on TV, and yes it was gripping. Intellectual, witty, humorous and packed with a punch. Don’t miss it. Kubrick indeed does a grand job. Kubrick has never disappointed me. He was a genius.

Elizabeth (1998)

Elizabeth (1998) Director: Shekhar Kapur Cat: Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush, Joseph Fiennes, Academy Nominations: Best Film, Best Actress in a leading role, Best Art direction, Best Cinematography, Best Costume and Best Original Score Shekhar is one of my favorite directors. His works are really intricate and well researched; hence well received as well. Elizabeth is his most celebrated work. Even if you are repulsed by period dramas, do watch Elizabeth, it has substance. A good cinema. Cate Blanchett continues to amaze me with her versatility, in fact a lil too much of versatility. Geoffrey Rush and Joseph continue to show case what they are good at; good performance.

Summer Lovers (1962)

Summer Lovers (1962) Cast: Peter Gallagher, Daryl Hannah I watched this movie on Netflix, after moving to Beaverton. It was indeed a break from the other movies I had been watching. Great performance, good plot, a lil predictable, warm, you can feel the summer. And you can feel the summer lovers too…A decent watch

Jackie Brown (1997)

Jackie Brown (1997) Director: Quentin Tarantino Cast: Pam Grier, Samuel L Jackson, Bridget Fonda, Robert De Niro One of earlier films from Quentin’s collection, saw it only in 2012. Well, I would say a good film, good watch, good cast…but missed the Quentin’s mark. Not a disappointment, but not the masterpiece.

The Messenger (2009)

The Messenger (2009) Cast: Woody Harrelson, Steve Buscemi, Jena Malone, Ben Foster Oscar Nominations: Best Supporting Actor (Woody Harrelson), Best Original Screenplay Woody and Ben, put together an act that is quite a spectacle. The plot is, my favorite word “intriguing”; and has the needed ups and lows to keep the momentum. I like the way how the movie unfolds, how it reaches a climax and what happens in the midst. A balanced one, not the best one on the block, but a good earnest effort to make good movie

Lock Stock and two smoking barrels (1998)

Lock Stock and two smoking barrels (1998) Director: Guy Ritchie Cast: Jason Statham I watched this movie almost 15 years after it made the waves…Though heard real rave reviews, I never picked this movie or rented it, but could not get to watch it…I don’t why I did not feel glued to the movie, and somehow never completed it…It was in 2012, that I finally gave it the needed push. Well, actually nobody should ever need push to watch Lock Stock and two smoking barrels. If you’ve not watched it yet like me, don’t wait anymore. If you like heist movies, you want have a good time, don’t give up on “Lock Stock and two smoking barrels”…Good to have a version, with the sub titles, it was lil hard for me to get the Brit accent right all the time…
