Trouble with the Curve (2012) Dir: Robert Lorenz Cast: Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams, Justin Timberlake Decent, checked off the list for Clint. Didn’t meet the expectations and didn’t realize it wasn’t Clint’s direction till, I saw the credits roll. Can be passed off.

If you don’t avoid the swamps, and get bogged down, what’s the use of knowing true north?”

Death proof (2007)
Death proof (2007) Dir: Quentin Tarantino Cast: Kurt Russell, Rosario Dawson I waited to watch this movie, a little longer than required. I had in fact rented Death proof 2-3 years back, but didn’t seem to get a Quentin feel, to it. Hence, left it unfinished. Recently, Death proof came up in discussions recently, and I was like what did I miss…Well, I did miss, quite a bit!! 2 weeks back I saw the movie and figured out what an idiot I was. For all the Quentin fans, watch this, in case you are one like me waiting for the recommendation.

Fracture(2007)
The Boxer (1987)
The Boxer (1987) Cast: Daniel Day Lewis, Emily Watson I did find some strains of similarity between The Boxer and In the Name of the Father, primarily the troubled times in Ireland. Daniel Day gives another spectacular performance along with Emily. Do not expect it to give you anything like Rocky, this is film is on a different level.

Heartbreak Ridge (1986) Cast: Clint Eastwood Director: Clint Eastwood Well, a little corny and highly predictable, I just watched it for Clint.
US Marshals(1998)
US Marshals(1998) Cast: Tommy Lee Jones, Wesley Snipes, Irene Jacob All that is required to make it a thriller. I liked Irene, later realized, I had seen her before in trilogy Red earlier.
Great Expectations (1998)
Great Expectations (1998) Cast: Ethan Hawke, Gwyneth Paltrow, Robert De Niro Based on the book by Charles Dickens The setting of the novel was changed to modern times, however tit was visual and literary brilliance at display. I have not relished Gwyneth's performance as an actor, but this movie was unlike the others. Amongst the classics, Great Expectations us finally a "check" for me.

Life of Pi (2012)
Life of Pi (2012) Director: Ang Lee Cast: Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Adil Hussain Based on: Yann Martel’s book. Irrfan Khan and Tabu, are paving their way into the American cinema and have made quite a mark too. I amazes at the transformation that Tabu underwent from the girl in “Ruk Ruk Ruk” to roles in Maqbool, Cheeni Kum and so on. Irrfan has a direct, in your face style, and sticks to it. That’s pretty much about the cast. Well, like to add that I saw two films of Adil Hussain in quick succession, Life of Pi and English-Vinglish. His resemblance to Kay Kay Menon, is one thing I noticed, and I think he would make better cast in a negative role. Ang Lee is definitely a versatile director and his subjects/works/films are a proof of it. I first noticed Ang Lee with Sense and Sensibility, and then there has been no looking back. Every movie ever since, has been a masterpiece. Life of Pi is one of the very few books, I have purchased and not finished. When I heard, Life of Pi is being made as a movie, I wanted to see what I missed. The movie is matches nearly to what I had imagined how Pi would be in the boat with the tiger. It is a visual and imaginative treat.

When you hear The Dirty Picture, it’s right to associate it with sleaze, a predictable story build-up, plot, climax. Yet, it stands out. It stands out as it’s a movie about Silk, it stands out for Vidya’s performance and it stands out for being so candid about the Indian male audience!!

Full Metal Jacket (1987)
Full Metal Jacket (1987) Director: Stanley Kubrick Academy wins: Best adapted screenplay I have said it numerous times, and I can’t say it again. I was recommended this film, knew it was great, but never watched it. It was saved for another day. Few weeks back “Full Metal Jacket” was playing on TV, and yes it was gripping. Intellectual, witty, humorous and packed with a punch. Don’t miss it. Kubrick indeed does a grand job. Kubrick has never disappointed me. He was a genius.
Elizabeth (1998)
Elizabeth (1998) Director: Shekhar Kapur Cat: Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush, Joseph Fiennes, Academy Nominations: Best Film, Best Actress in a leading role, Best Art direction, Best Cinematography, Best Costume and Best Original Score Shekhar is one of my favorite directors. His works are really intricate and well researched; hence well received as well. Elizabeth is his most celebrated work. Even if you are repulsed by period dramas, do watch Elizabeth, it has substance. A good cinema. Cate Blanchett continues to amaze me with her versatility, in fact a lil too much of versatility. Geoffrey Rush and Joseph continue to show case what they are good at; good performance.
